My allergies are making it impossible to sleep – what can I do to get a good night’s sleep?: Oh boy I hear you on this one! Every fall when the leaves start to rot and mold becomes so bad I begin to really suffer so trust me when I say that you are not the only one. However, there is help. For me, the nasal congestion makes sleeping the most difficult and my wife goes crazy with the snoring. For the most part, allergy treatment isn’t in the allergy itself but rather in the symptom. My late-night snoring and tossing and turning is taken care of with an over the counter nasal spray along with some Tylenol PM. That is how I take care of my allergies.
But that’s not for everyone. If I were you, I would make sure that you are attending the allergy symptoms and speaking with your doctor about how to take care of your sleeping problems as well. Regardless of your allergy problems, sleep disorders can develop through allergy season so I would go out of my way to make sure that any allergy problems are taken care of in the long run by making sure that the symptom is taken care of and the sleep is taken care of. Thankfully, most antihistamine drugs make a person drowsy and sleepy, so keep taking them according to your doctor’s advice.
Do you have any tips on how to make the house more defensible against allergens?: Yes! Actually this is a topic of interest around the dinner table as we discuss the different ways to make out home more safe against allergies and make our allergies less troublesome. Making sure that everyone in your home is making an effort and creating a safe environment for you and your allergies is a positive step towards improving the quality of you and your families lives during allergy season.
The first thing I would suggest is going out and spending the money on hypoallergenic sheets, comforters, bedspreads and pillows as well as a mattress if you can swing it. Second, make sure that you are putting your dog or cat outside or in a bed in a common living area and NOT in your bedroom! This is a huge no-no as pet dander can become brutal to your allergies. Same thing goes for air filtration. Make sure that you ask your landlord or apartment manager to check the air filtration system often enough to make sure that you are not getting sick from the forced air or heating ducts.
